Grand Canyon
We got the hell outa the Expo area with our lives! The wind was blowing up dust like crazy for the whole weekend along with all the cars and foot traffic stirring it up even more made for impacted nose bogers!
So off we went but we did meet many nice people at the Expo.
Along the way to the Grand Canyon we passed a few of these rafts being hauled over to the start of the Canyon for rafting tours, this raft was about 60 feet long and about 12 feet wide, BIG!
Stopped in at Navajo Bridge for a look at really the start of the GC ( Grand Canyon) where there is a nice foot bridge over the Colorado river,
Where we saw a few condors, this one is #19 of only around 200 known in California and Arizona.
We made our way to a campground in Jacob lake to do laundry and stock up on water but water is scarce on the Kaibab plateau so had to make do with what we had, here we had deer munching away several feet from our camp site.
Then into the north rim of the Grand Canyon park for a hike to Angels point where I had to save Les from falling over the edge.
The north rim is so much quieter than the south rim with a beautiful lodge where we had lunch after I waited in line for fifteen minutes to get the prime window table.. awesome!
On our way out we saw this Australian designed rig that was also at the Expo but we did not go into it as it was being delivered to the new owners there, they weren't around at this time, too bad.
We did go to the ranger station to see if we could get a camping permit for a place that I wanted to visit called Sublime Point. We managed to get one of only two permits for the following night so we had to find a spot for the night so off we went out of the park and drove some back roads that took us to some off the beaten path areas next to the canyon, it was along this road that we were bushwacking along and our new freshly bought Trasheroo that we had just filled with fire wood got ripped off the back of the truck and dragged for a bit damaging it and making it look like an old dirty bag, picked it up, dusted it off and onwards!
Camped close to here. That evening we decided to do a little hike but it turned out to be longer than expected and by the time we got back we were bushed.
Next day we didn't get up very early at all but eventually got on our way entering the park once more and found the start of the trail for Sublime Point.
Along the way we caught up with a couple that had stopped for a break and they told us they were going back out due to a few trees that had gone down across the road and on the way out they ran into another couple that went on to see if they could cut through the trees, they had a bow saw so they were on there way back to see if they could help. Upon arriving at the downed trees the guy with the bow saw had managed to cut several branches and Les jumps out of the truck and yells at them,"you are going to need a real saw for that!" She knew I had a chain saw but I wasn't saying anything because it hasn't run in nine months and was just dragged all over the Baja for five months so I didn't think it would start and it pretty much nearly didn't. After trying to get it going for half an hour along with one of the fellows telling me about Sublime Point being on his bucket list and this was the only time that he expected to ever get there that I almost gave up but picked the saw up and gave er one more try and what do you know........it starts!
Cut the trees up and got them off the road. That guy was sooooo happy he thanked us several times.
Made it to the point, which is basically a narrow peninsula that sticks out into the Grand Canyon with 360 degree views.
We thought the very tip of the point was a camp site until another couple of ex Expoers showed up and asked us which campsite we wanted?? I said, " this one" he said that this is a day use area and the actual campsites are away from the point...........so we eventually moved to mostly get out of the wind.
View out the kitchen window.
You dont want to get too close to the edge.
Our neighbors that camped close to us at the Expo.
Planning the next portion of the trip.
Way down there you see the Colorado river, we saw two of the large river rafts go through these rapids earlier.
Sublime point is VERY SUBLIME! Its an incredible spot!
On the way out there was evidence of someone having got very stuck, doesnt look bad but that was a deep messy hole.
From here we head northwards for Valley of the Gods.
